The Russian Congress of Canada (RCC) issued the following statement in commemoration of the victims of the flight MH17 shot down in Ukraine one year ago.
On July 17, 2014 the Malaysia Airline flight MH17 was struck over heavily involved in the civil war eastern part of Ukraine. As a result 298 passengers lost their lives, including children. That was one of the biggest tragedies of our time when so many civilians died.
Several memorial services were held today in Netherlands, Australia, Malaysia and the UK. It is especially worth mentioning that the people of Donetsk Republic paid their honor to the victims of the plane crush. Over a thousand people of the nearby villages and towns came to have a prayer, a procession and a meeting, since they witnessed the catastrophe last year and consider it their personal tragedy. They also placed a memorial stone with the inscription: “In memory of 298 victims. The innocent victims of the civil war” and released 298 balloons into the sky.
UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon paid a tribute to the victims of the tragic incident. In his statement he said: “This anniversary is another stark reminder of the continuing dire situation in eastern Ukraine and the need to bring an urgent end to this conflict.”
Unfortunately, the continuing international criminal investigation is grossly delayed due to the fact that the Ukrainian authorities are not exposing crucial data, although, if they were as innocent as they claim, it would have seemed to be in their best interest. Constant unsubstantiated statements of high-ranking politicians and their supporters, endless anti-Russian media campaign, and the attempts to misuse the UN are also made to the detriment of the criminal investigation.
RCC sincerely hopes that the international investigation team will maintain objectivity in the matter and find the real perpetrators of this heinous crime. It must be thorough, independent and objective in full compliance with UN Security Council resolution.
The Russian Congress of Canada joined all those who express their condolences to the families and friends of the deceased including our fellow Canadian citizen. May our prayers help comfort those who are left behind and reach those who are no longer with them.
