Russian Congress of Canada expresses its condolences on the sudden death of the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations and the UN Security Council, Vitaly Churkin. It is a terrible loss for Russia and all humanity. His voice, at times lonely, sounded strongly from the tribune of the UN Security Council defending the position and interests of Russia on the international scene. In his last interview, he advocated for the reform to improve United Nations peacekeeping operations around the world.
Vitaly Churkin devoted five years of his diplomatic career to working in Canada as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation in 1998-2003. We are eternally grateful to him for his enormous contribution to the development of mutual understanding and cooperation between Canada and Russia. Vitaly Ivanovich died at work, remaining in service to his country and the world until his dying breath. He was an outstanding diplomat, a bright and extraordinary personality. We bow our heads in respect for his courage and determination to resist the forces, embarked on a dangerous path of confrontation, and hope that his successor will pursue the course of expanding cooperation and strengthening peace.
Russian Congress of Canada also expresses deep condolences to the family of Vitaly Ivanovich Churkin.
